Creation from the Centers of Trauma
What does it mean to see yourself reflected as desired? Scroll through any gay dating app, any hot guy #. How many chest scars come across your screen? Part of believing you are anything - including being something to be desired- is to see that reality reflected as possible.
The practice began as a simple gesture of adding a pink scar to the drawing of unsolicited selfies. Through the illustrations and the combination of found Sentences from various texts (the original Dr Kinsey interviews, Pre-stonewall Christopher Street Zines, “we can fix you” Psychological texts), the aim is to communicate the lived experience of being a queer trans masculine millennial from Philadelphia, who is survivor more than once over.
Bryan aims to find the words for what it means to live in a body that physically straddles the Grand Canyon of gender, to carry that body into Gay leather (ie Cis daddy central) spaces, and to claim oneself as desirable. The found sentences pulled from various shades of yellowing books deal with the crisis of masculinity in a body that maleness didn’t originally inhabit.
I have degrees I don’t particularly utilize, a Bachelors in Architecture and Masters in Education, both from Syracuse University and I have had my work exhibited in Philly, and NYC.
